Oh, look: It's going to be a hurricane, and it's headed right for the Dade/Broward line.

That's about 10 minutes north of our apartment.

At least it's a weak old category 1. ::eye rolls::

In health-related news:
a) still don't have appointment for Second Scary Test - that's been a bit of a saga.
b) pain has reduced substantially, still not entirely gone.
c) have decided to acquire horrible hacking lung infection AGAIN - I'm telling you, I'm starting to forget what feeling healthy is like. And coughing is SUCH fun right now, what with the exisiting lower abdominal tenderness.

As I sit here, surfing and reading, I came across an extremely welcome bit of news:

Chef is coming to DVD!!!

This is a HYSTERICAL British comedy that I discovered around the same time as Black Adder. The main character is a brilliant chef and and absolute tyrant over his kitchen. Of course, his staff is well...umm...challenged in many ways. :) Lenny Henry's performance (as Chef Gareth Blackstock) is fantastic, talking a mile a minute, delivering instructions and insults without pausing for breath.

I can't wait.

This is almost helping me feel better.

Gregory Maguire has written a sequel to Wicked!

I normally don't trust sequels written for what seem to initially be complete stories that don't NEED continuation, but as usual, Maguire seems to have come up with a great great hook.

V.V. pleased.

Bah. What does a stoopid test know?? ;)

You are dignified, spiritual, and wise.
Always unsatisfied, you constantly try to better yourself.
You are also a seeker of knowledge and often buried in books.

You tend to be philosophical, looking for the big picture in life.
You dream of inner peace for yourself, your friends, and the world.
A good friend, you always give of yourself first.

Ganked from biftec:
the Wit
(52% dark, 34% spontaneous, 16% vulgar)
your humor style:
CLEAN | COMPLEX | DARK

You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're
probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean you're
pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the
Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor
and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I
guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the
perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer. Your sense of humor
takes the most effort to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my
opinion.

Also, you probably loved the Office. If you don't know what I'm
talking about, check it out here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theoffice/.

In San Diego for the comicon right now with My Boy. We are having a substantial amount of fun, with giving many creators much of our money, and also hanging out with maukingbird and augiedb.
There is a substantial amount of total and abject exhaustion, of course. But such is the price for Fun.

The tiny tiny tiny downside to this is that I DON'T HAVE HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE. I have two copies waiting for me in Miami at the leasing office of our apartment complex (one deluxe edition, one regular). Which is good. But they're not HERE. And my dear friend L fromm England sent me a text message with a teaser that is just KILLING me.

I may have to go to Borders here. Or maybe the Scholastic booth at the Con will have them?????

Then ALA has a list of books you might like.

Many thanks to sabrinanymph for posting the link.

And she's totally right, by the way - don't expect Harry when you read Artemis Fowl. :)

I've read some of these, not all. Some I've picked up and flipped through, others I haven't read at all. Some I own and haven't read yet. :)

So far, moving to the top of my reading list:
The Dark is Rising - Susan Cooper
The Secret of Platform 13 - Iva Ibbotson
Mister Monday - Garth Nix - I *HEART* his Abhorsen Trilogy
Singer of All Songs - Kate Constable

Anybody else agree/disagree with the list?

Glaring glaring ommission - William Nicholson's Wind On Fire Trilogy. I read the first one and it's just phenomenal.

Also, I highly recommend a book that's apparently still not available in the States: The Looking Glass Wars. It's a retelling, of sorts, of Alice in Wonderland. In terms of world-building, it's just dark and fantastic. I can understand some of the critiques, in that you can visualize the video game based off of it quite easily, but that doesn't bother me overmuch.

Just Finished:
- The aforementioned Looking Glass Wars
- Secret History of the Pink Carnation - a sort of very loose "sequel" to the The Scarlet Pimpernel.
- Superheroes in my Pants - Mark Evanier's collection of essays about comics and the comics industry.

Currently Reading:
- The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana - Umberto Eco's new book
- Constitutional Law II: Limits of Power (hey, trying to get ready for the fall semester)
- Thieves & Kings Volume 2 - I FINALLY got the time to sit down and read Volume 1 in about 2 sittings. WOW WOW WOW.
- Who is Donna Troy?

Oh, inblackink - Holly Black's new book, Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie is out!

Okay, so I finally got tagged for this thing by maukingbird.

List five songs that you are currently digging ... it doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words or even if they're any good but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions in your blog along with your five songs. Then tag five other people to see what they're listening to.

So. Mine.

"Black Roses Red" - Alana Grace
"Tobacco Island" - Flogging Molly
"Righteously" - Lucinda Williams
“Forgiveness” – Patti Griffin
“Wonderful Night” – Fatboy Slim

Generally speaking, I am also thoroughly enjoying my introduction to the Cowboy Junkies, courtesy of dettiot. I just don't know song names yet. :)

I don’t think there’s anyone on my FL left to tag with this, though… Hmmm…..

From the fog-shrouded streets of London, that is.

We had a FABULOUS time. Even My Boy, who is a bit of a homebody, started asking when we could go back. :D My Evil Plans are clearly working. ;)

Will post details and photos later, as soon as jet lag has left my confuzzled brain.

Thanks to the wonderrifical galador42, I now have the....CHRONICLES OF NARNIA OFFICIAL TRAILER

OhmyGod. It looks just...wow. I am a Girl with Goosebumps. As I've said before, as much as I absolutely adore LoTR, the Chronicles of Narnia are so inextricably intertwined with my childhood that it is impossible to describe.

It's actually overshadowed the new HP trailer...difficult to do, since 4 is my absolute favorite of the HP books thus far, and well, we're all Rabid Fans here. :D

So so so happy. Where is November?!?!?!?

galador42, you are my Official Favorite Person for today!!!
